Hello,
Thank you for contacting AIDS Vancouver for HIV/AIDS related information.

The short answer to your question is Yes; even if your partner gets an HIV test, there is no way of knowing whether the test is conclusive if you don't know her history. This is because HIV tests are conclusive at 12 weeks, and there is no way of knowing what her history has been in the 12 weeks before her test. Unprotected sex is a high risk of HIV transmission, so we would encourage you to get tested yourself in addition to your partner getting tested. Regardless of the activity, we encourage all sexually active individuals to get tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections on a regular basis as part of their healthcare maintenance.

Thanks,

Sandra, AIDS Vancouver Helpline Volunteer
