Thank you for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline forum,

It sounds like you have some questions about having acquired HIV after having sex with a commercial sex worker. Hopefully I can provide you with some information about transmission.

You took a safe step in using a condom. There have been a low amount of reported cases of HIV transmission with a condom. Those cases only coming from instances when the condom rips, or other human errors.
From what you have told me, there was no body fluid (like vaginal fluid) in contact with your penis, so you are at No Risk of HIV.

From your second sexual experience, you are still at No Risk for HIV. Even if you had vaginal fluid on your penis, the condom would protect your urethra from from the vaginal fluid. The vaginal fluid would also have been exposed to air, and once HIV is exposed to air it can not be transmitted.

Here is the HIV transmission equation which will hopefully help you understand how HIV can be transmitted.

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection
Feel free to visit the AIDS Vancouver website for more information on HIV transmission. Or if you live in the BC area, you can call the AIDS Vancouver Helpline with more questions you have.

I hope I was able to bring some comfort to you and help answer your questions!
