: I used a cotton ear bud to clean my ears which had a blood stain on it.  Without noticing that, I used it to clean by ear and I cleaned deeply. Not sure if the blood was HIV infected.  In case the blood on the cotton ear bud had HIV, what are the chances of my exposure to HIV infection by using the same cotton ear bud to clean my ear deeply? Thanks in advance!!

Hi there and thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Online Helpline as a source for HIV/AIDS related information.
The simple answer to your question is no, HIV cannot be transmitted in this manner.  HIV is an extremely weak virus and cannot live once exposed to the air; it dies within 1-2 minutes after exposure.
