Hi,

Thanks for contacting AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I will try and answer your questions as best I can.

In June you had unprotected sex, and now have developed symptoms. Some people will develop strong flu like illness, 2-6 weeks after infection but not all people do. Because HIV symptoms mirror other viral infections or can be due or explained by other things, testing is the only way to know.

There are many great tests, we recommend the 3rd Generation or the Rapid (test results within minutes) tests. Tests are done 4 weeks to 3 months (although up to 95% of infections are detectable within 4-6 weeks)after point of infection. Most people develop detectable antibodies in 21-25 days. The World Health Organization considers all test results conclusive at 12 weeks. Since your sexual activity was in June and if you went for test in October your test results would be conclusive.

For more information you can check our website at http://www.aidsvancouver.org[www.aidsvancouver.org](www.aidsvancouver.org) or give us a phone call at (604)-696-4666.

Best Wishes,

Renee
