Hi!

I had unprotected sex with a women with unknown status (I'm a man). 3 weeks after the incident I got fever and swollen lymph nodes.
I tested for hiv on 3.5 and 7 weeks with 4th gen combo test, almost 12 weeks and 40 or 41 weeks with alere determine rapid blood test- all negative.
I'm worried that I contracted a rare strain or was infected with something else simontanouesly (like HCV) as I read this can cause false negatives.
Is this true with modern testing that this can cause false negatives up to 12 months?

Hello, and thank you for contacting AidsVancouver Helpline. I'm sorry to hear that you've been stressed about this matter, and I hope I can help alleviate some of your stress.

According to the standards of the World Health Organization, an HIV test results is considered conclusive after 12 weeks post exposure. However, there are 4 exceptions that could cause an HIV positive status to show up later than 12 weeks:

1) if you are having treatment for Hepatitis C

2) If you are having chemotherapy treatment

3) if you are on P.E.P. treatment for HIV

4) If you have other immunodeficiency disorders

If the above 4 conditions don't apply to you, then your negative test result after 12 weeks is conclusive and there is no need for further testing for HIV. However, if you are worried about other STDs I recommend getting tested for them as well if you haven't already. Also, I suggest to stay away from the internet as there are lots of misinformation that can cause you additional stress, and instead I recommend partnering with a health care professional if you have further concerns about your test results.

I hope that answered your question. If you like more information, please contact our helpline again, or visit us at AidsVancouver.org.
